Questions
How is net salary calculated in Germany?
Your gross is reduced by income tax (Lohnsteuer) on the progressive 2026 tariff, the solidarity surcharge where it still applies, church tax if you are a member, and four social contributions: pension (9.3%), health (about 8.75% on public insurance), long-term care (1.8% or more), and unemployment (1.3%). What is left is your net.
What is a tax class (Steuerklasse)?
Your tax class sets how much income tax is withheld. Class 1 is for single employees, class 2 for single parents, classes 3, 4, and 5 are for married couples depending on who earns more, and class 6 is for a second job. The calculator covers all six; classes 5 and 6 use the statutory comparison method and are an estimate.
Does the result include church tax?
Only if you tick the church member option. Church tax is 8% of your income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg and 9% everywhere else. If you are not a registered member, it is not deducted.
How accurate is it?
It uses the published 2026 income-tax formula and social-security rates, so it lands within about one percent of official payroll for a normal salary. The main variable is your health insurer additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag), which differs by fund; the calculator uses the 2026 average.
