2026 tax guide
Norwegian ordinary salary taxation combines 22% tax on general income after standard deductions, progressive bracket tax on gross personal income and national-insurance contributions. Qualifying foreign workers can instead use the flat PAYE scheme.
Updated 22 June 2026. Examples use the 2026 ordinary rules, tax class 1, standard minimum and personal deductions, no Finnmark or Nord-Troms reduction and no additional deductions.

Worked example
Under ordinary taxation, estimated general income and bracket tax total NOK 100,714, while employee national insurance is NOK 45,600. Estimated take-home is NOK 453,686 per year or NOK 37,807 per month.
Under the standard 25% PAYE scheme, the same gross produces NOK 450,000 take-home without ordinary deductions. Eligibility and personal deductions determine which scheme is available or preferable.
Deductions explained
Trinnskatt is added to the 22% general-income tax. Only the part of gross personal income inside each bracket is charged at that bracket’s percentage.
Qualifying short-term foreign workers can pay a flat 25% including national insurance. Ordinary deductions are unavailable under PAYE, and workers can opt for ordinary taxation subject to the rules.
Holiday pay is commonly accrued in one year and paid the next, often with reduced ordinary salary in the holiday month. Annual net is more useful than dividing one unusual June payslip.
Finnmark and Nord-Troms rules, commuting, union fees, interest and other deductions can change final tax. Occupational pension is generally an employer cost and is not deducted here.
Methodology
The calculator applies 2026 ordinary general-income tax, bracket tax, national insurance, the standard minimum deduction and personal allowance. It also supports the 25% PAYE rate and 17.4% PAYE rate without Norwegian national insurance.
It excludes wealth tax, regional reductions, detailed personal deductions, holiday-pay timing and tax-card withholding adjustments.
Questions
You pay 22% tax on your general income (after the minimum standard deduction of 46%, capped at 92,000 kroner, and the 108,550 kroner personal allowance), plus a progressive bracket tax (trinnskatt) on your gross from 1.7% to 17.8%, and national insurance (trygdeavgift) of 7.6%. What is left is your net.
Trinnskatt is a stepped tax on your gross personal income, on top of the flat 22% on general income. It starts at 1.7% above about 226,000 kroner and rises through five steps to 17.8% on very high incomes, which is how Norway makes the system progressive.
Occupational pension (OTP) is paid by your employer, so it is not deducted here. The calculator also excludes the lower tax rates for Finnmark and Nord-Troms and any extra deductions you may claim, such as commuting or trade union fees.
Qualifying foreign workers can use a flat 25% tax rate that includes national insurance and does not allow ordinary deductions. If exempt from Norwegian national insurance, the 2026 rate is 17.4%. Select the relevant PAYE option only if you meet the scheme conditions.
It uses the 2026 rates from the Norwegian Tax Administration: the 22% general income tax, the five-step bracket tax, the 7.6% national insurance, and the standard deductions. It assumes tax class 1 and standard deductions, so your exact figure may differ slightly.
