How Swiss gross salary becomes net pay

Swiss take-home pay depends strongly on residence, household and pension plan. The calculator combines a committed 2026 ESTV tax snapshot for all 26 canton capitals with AHV, ALV, occupational pension and accident-insurance deductions.

Updated 22 June 2026. Examples use Zurich city, a single employee aged 35–44, no children or church tax, estimated minimum BVG, a 0.4% non-occupational accident premium and 13 payments.

Worked example

CHF 100,000 salary in Zurich

A single employee on CHF 100,000 keeps approximately CHF 78,139 after CHF 11,848 of Income Tax and about CHF 10,013 of AHV, ALV, estimated minimum BVG and non-occupational accident insurance.

With 13 equal salary payments, the average is about CHF 6,011 net per payment. An employer pension plan with higher contributions, a different commune or source-tax status can change the actual payslip.

Deductions explained

Why Swiss net salary varies so much

Canton and commune determine local tax

Income Tax is charged by the Confederation, canton and commune. The calculator uses the capital commune of each canton, derived from the official ESTV calculator. At CHF 100,000, the same profile pays materially less tax in Zug than in Bern, Lausanne or Geneva.

BVG is not one universal percentage

Occupational pension deductions depend on age, insured salary and employer plan. The default estimates the minimum employee retirement credit on coordinated salary. Enter the annual employee contribution from an offer or pension certificate for a closer cash-pay result.

Accident insurance varies by employer

Employers pay occupational accident insurance. Employees commonly pay the non-occupational premium, whose rate depends on the insurer and workplace risk. The calculator defaults to 0.4% but accepts the rate from a contract or payslip.

Ordinary tax is not source tax

The ESTV profiles model ordinary annual assessment. Many foreign residents without a C permit have tax withheld at source using separate canton tables. Those deductions can differ, even though an annual reassessment may later apply.

Methodology

How accurate is this Swiss salary calculator?

Income Tax is interpolated between official 2026 ESTV calculations for eight gross-income anchors, every canton capital, single and married one-income households, zero to four children and optional Catholic or Protestant church tax.

AHV, IV, EO and ALV use statutory rates. BVG is either a minimum age-band estimate or the manual annual amount entered, and accident insurance uses the entered rate. Exact tax still varies by commune, deductions, wealth, pension plan and assessment method.

Questions

How is net salary calculated in Switzerland?

The calculator subtracts federal, cantonal and communal Income Tax, AHV/IV/EO, unemployment insurance, occupational pension (BVG), non-occupational accident insurance and church tax when selected. Tax uses 2026 ESTV-derived profiles for the chosen canton capital.

Why does my canton matter so much?

Each canton, and each commune within it, sets its own income tax. The same salary can be taxed roughly twice as much in Geneva as in Zug. Choose your canton capital for a consistent estimate; your exact commune may produce a different result.

How accurate is it, and what is excluded?

It covers all canton capitals and interpolates official ESTV results by income, marital status and children. BVG can use a statutory-minimum estimate or a manual amount, and accident insurance is editable. Exact commune, source-tax status, wealth, deductions and employer pension rules can still change the result.
