Questions

How is take-home pay calculated in the UK?

Your gross is reduced by income tax and National Insurance. The first 12,570 pounds is tax-free (the personal allowance), then 20% to 50,270 pounds, 40% above that, and 45% over 125,140 pounds. National Insurance is 8% between 12,570 and 50,270 pounds and 2% above. The personal allowance tapers away between 100,000 and 125,140 pounds.

Does it cover Scotland?

Not yet. Scotland sets its own income tax bands, which differ from the rest of the UK. This calculator covers England, Wales, and Northern Ireland; a Scottish version is on the way.

What is not included?

Workplace pension contributions and student loan repayments are not deducted, because they depend on your scheme and plan. If you pay either, your take-home will be a little lower.
